Motorstorm: Pacific Rift Speed Pack

VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!! New Motorstorm: Pacific Rift expansion pack has hit the PlayStation Store, called the Speed Pack. The Speed Pack is the first of a two part expansion pack for Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, which is called the Speed Weekend. The other expansion pack is called the Adrenaline Pack, which should be releasing soon. I’ll talk about the Adrenaline Pack when it releases; however, let’s get back on topic. The Speed pack is a great add-on for Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, coming with lots of new content that is sure to keep fans of the game busy for hours and the expansion pack only costs $9.99.

So, let’s get right in to it, the first thing gamers will notice in the Speed Pack, are the new maps that have been added to the game.

The first Map I want to talk about is Engorged. This map is beautiful with a flowing river tearing through the heart of the track. This map is a Monster Truck’s heaven with all the water that the big tires of the monster truck can tear through.

The second map included in the Speed Pack is Quicksand. This is a beach that has been modified into a racing course with many jumps and a large hairpin turn. This map is best suited for a bike or car.

The third and final map added in the Speed Pack is Darkfire Swamp. This map has many twists and turns and is going to be a problem to master. I still haven’t figured out a good pathway to use let alone what vehicle is good on this map.

But wait!! There are more tracks in the Speed Pack. There are three volcanic remixes from previous tracks in Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.

The first remix is Caldera Ridge Volcanic. While it is similar to the original, the volcanic remix manages to keeps things interesting by adding in a few surprise pit stops, fire pit stops that is, and for those of you who love to cut that sharp right at the beginning of Caldera Ridge, the guys at Evolution Studios have left you a surprise on your little short cut :).

The next track to receive a remix is Wildfire. Wildfire Volcanic adds lots of new jumps and pathways for gamers to master, also look out for that lava patch!!!

The final track to receive a volcanic remix is The Rift. The Rift Volcanic is probably the most challenging remix of them all, because the developers truly have made it more dangerous than before.

Another addition of the Speed Pack was the Speed Weekend which has added 32 speed events for gamers to rip through. Now, in these speed events you start out with a bank of 10 seconds which you have to pass through checkpoints to increase. This is cool, in order for you to qualify for the event, you have to complete the race with a set amount of time in your bank for: ‘easy’ races its 15 seconds, for ‘medium’ races its 20 seconds, and for ‘hard’ races it’s 25. However, after you qualify for a race, depending on what vehicle you’re using, the speed event changes. So if you’re on a bike, you have to duck under gates to gain time, sort of like a motorcycle limbo. You also have to avoid certain ramps in the ground that will penalize you after a race is over. Also, if you’re in say a Monster Truck, you have to run over barrels. The green barrels add time to your bank, while the red barrels detract time from your bank. These little tweaks add a whole new layer of depth and tactics to the speed events in Motorstorm: Pacific Rift and are a welcomed refinement to the speed event formula. The Speed events are also broken up into vehicle classes. So there are: Bikes, ATV, Buggy, Rally, Truck, Mudpluggers, Big Rigs, and Monster Truck classes, which are then broken down by difficulty with are two ‘easy’ races, two ‘medium’ races, and two ‘hard races’.

Also, another thing to keep gamers playing The Speed Weekend expansion is the ability to see if your friends beat your time on any of the speed events. So, if a friend beats your time, the game will send you a notification that your time has been beaten by said friend. This is good and will keep rivalries between friends volcanic!

Also, the Speed Weekend comes with numerous trophies to unlock.

Here’s a list: 10 Bronze, 5 Silver, and 1 Gold

Bike Weekender (Bronze): Qualify and Race All Bike Rival Races.

ATV Weekender (Bronze): Qualify and Race All ATV Rival Races.

Buggy Weekender (Bronze): Qualify and Race All Buggy Rival Races.

Rally Weekender (Bronze): Qualify and Race All Rally Car Rival Races.

Racing Truck Weekender (Bronze): Qualify and Race All Truck Rival Races.

Mudplugger Weekender (Bronze): Qualify and Race All Mudplugger Rival Races.

Big Rig Weekender (Bronze): Qualify and Race All Big Rig Rival Races.

Monster Truck Weekender (Bronze): Qualify and Race All Monster Truck Rival Races.

Six Splitter (Bronze): Play a Split-Screen race on all six SPEED tracks.

Over Qualified (Silver): Beat Developer Ghosts on all six SPEED tracks.

Sand and Sulphur (Silver): Win an Online race on each of the six SPEED tracks.

Distinguished Character (Gold): Win online with each DLC character on any DLC track.

Further Qualifications (Silver): Beat Developer Ghosts on all eight ADRENALINE tracks.

Surf and Turf (Silver): Win an Online race on each of the eight ADRENALINE tracks.

Eight Splitter (Bronze): Play a Split-Screen Race on all eight ADRENALINE tracks.

Hardcore Heaven (Silver): Hardcore Freeplay - Win on all eight ADRENALINE tracks. (Full Grid)

All in all, I think there is enough content there to justify the price of the expansion pack. There are a lot of cool tracks and remixes on past tracks that keep things interesting. Also, the remix on the Speed event formula has added a wealth of depth to the speed events, which will have gamers busy for hours trying to add seconds to their completion times. The only drawback I have with the Speed Pack is the inability to use the new tracks in ranked online races. So I say: BUY IT!

It's a great expansion. Absent from your review: there are also some vehicles and drivers added. So far there's a new vehicle in quite a few of the classes, and there's a couple new drivers, and that's just what's open when you download the expansion. There are also probably more that unlock beating the Speed weekend and a few tied to trophies. Also in the Speed Weekend, there's a sneek peek at one of the Adrenaline tracks....Brimstone.
